Scavino Wines                                                Back

Enrico Scavino - son of Paolo, and today owner, winemaker and virtual creator of this model estate " PAOLO SCAVINO "- With prime vineyards in the township of Castiglion Falletto known for wines of stunning longevity, (and tiny vineyards in the sublime crus of Cannubi and Rocca dell'Annunziata), his wines are amongst the longest lived in the whole Barolo appellation. Enrico has been rewarded many times by the highest ratings in the Italian and international press, and in 2004 he has been rated (with the 2000 vintage of his Barolo Bric dël Fiasc) among the top ten producers in the world by "Wine Spectator". Scavino's estate has a vineyard extension of 19 hectares mainly planted with Nebbiolo (15 hectares) with smaller plots of Barbera, Dolcetto, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Fertilization is organic and pruning short. Production is thus inevitably small by any standards, endowing these Baroli with superb concentration. The township of Castiglion Falletto has always produced a Barolo of unusual strength, famous for its formidable tannic clout, and Scavino's wines certainly have the power justly attributed to this particular zone. But the tannic quality so ubiquitous among the available Baroli from Castiglione Falletto has always been and is still, powerfully reinforced by a style of vinification that priviledges extra long macerations on the skin (up to 30 days), often at very high fermentation temperatures. This is certainly not Scavino’s style, in which elegance is preferred to clout! Maceration time for Barolo is between 7 and 12 days (depending on the vineyard the grapes come from), the wine is then aged for the first year in French oak barriques (part new, part old) and a further 12 months in French oak casks (of a capacity of 30-40-50 hectolitres) especially made for the estate. After bottling, Scavino’s Barolo is then cellared for 6/7 months before release. The result is wines of unearthly beauty: power and finesse perfectly balanced, the wood barely perceptible beneath the soft, rich texture. The range of wines is also remarkable: 5 Baroli - a regular Barolo, Barolo Bric dël Fiasc, Barolo Cannubi and Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata – all single vineyard bottlings from crus of extraordinary quality! – and the scintillating Barolo Carobric, a blend of  Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric dël Fiasc. Each cru a clear homage to great terroir, the Carobric an obvious reference to the local tradition and art of blending great vineyards to achieve a whole that surpasses its parts. But also a barrel aged Barbera, a Dolcetto, a Langhe Nebbiolo, a Langhe Bianco ("Sorriso" a blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc), a Langhe Rosso ("Corale" a complex and exciting blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon) and a red "Vino da Tavola" (a blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Cabernet Sauvignon). Starting with the 2002 vintage, the estate now offers “Bricco Ambrogio”, a single vineyard Barolo made from the homonymous cru in the township of Roddi.
