he 2003 Barolo Arborina presents a livelier color than the normale, along with gorgeous red fruit, menthol and spice overtones that carry through to the finish. This elegant, refined Barolo offers superb balance in a style that captures the essence of the vintage in its additional weightiness, but without compromising the integrity of the vineyard Altare has single-handedly made among the most recognized in Barolo. It is one of the highlights of the vintage, but will require a few years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021. Elio Altare’s wines represent the finest of the artisanal tradition, so it can hardly be surprising that he has once again produced some of the vintage’s most compelling Barolos. In fact, with his 2003 Barolos Altare shows just how far ahead of the pack he is. Now that he is officially “retired,” Altare is even more philosophical than in the past. “At the end of the day 50% of what makes a wine great is luck,” says Altare, in his characteristic self-deprecating style. If that is the case Altare must surely be one of the luckiest growers on the planet. “This is my 40th harvest, yet each vintage has a unique story to tell, which is what makes wine so fascinating. In 2003 we did four Nebbiolo harvests from the 7th to the 28th of September. The earlier harvests gave us some freshness while the later harvests provided more richness and body.” Altare’s 2004s are potentially profound, and his cellar also holds some of the finest 2005 Barolos I have tasted so far.

Dark ruby red in color, the Larigi has a very elegant nose layered with aromas of ripe berry, sweet spices and toasted oak wood. Warm and soft on the palate, its flavor is intense, with velvety tannins and a very long and pleasant finish.

Eyes:Red Brick in the glass, definitely showing maturity.
Nose:Leather, cedar charcoal, cola and cherry layers. With time and decanting the cola emerges with cedar and vanilla. Over more time dry tobacco comes out as another layer. Delightfully fine nose.
Palate:Tight tannins but layered. Needs decanting. Air opens up with even tannins and a solid back with a very nice silken feel.
Finish: even old world finish. Some cedar and vanilla reemerge with the predominance of fruit coming out here.

Overall a fine Barolo, richly layered from a good year.

Aged in a fleeting 2-3 months in used oak barrel for clarification purposes, this exhibits a lively bright purple colour. One of the most harmonious Dolcettos Clerico has made, this is juicy and precise with delicious, refreshing bitter sweet cherry character, showing perfect acid balance and fine but fortifying fruit tannins.

This demonstrates powerful, brooding flavours of ripe hedgerow fruits and spice, a muscular, intense and close-knit wine of great potential.

A Nebbiolo, Barbera, Merlot and Cabernet Sauivgnon blend aged in new oak barriques. A robust, ripe and lusty blend packed full of cool, crushed blackcurrant flavours firmed up by a thick backbone of fine, ripe tannins, finishing strongly on notes of cedar and cracked pepper.

This Domaine will sadly be splitting in two as from the 2003 vintage, the Corino brothers Renato and Giuliano going their separate ways. Renato aged the 2004s in the estate’s original cellars but will have completed his own by the time the 2005s come along. These are some of the most successful Barolos in what is a very great vintage. Pure, linear and precise wines, they demonstrate all that is beautiful about La Morra and the 2001 vintage. Giuliano regards 2000 a very good vintage, too, “it has all of the virtues of the 1997s without the vices, being generous and seductively ripe but more restrained and with higher acids.

A stunner. Surely one of the most sumptuous unwooded Barberas money can buy. This absolutely ripples with ripe fresh flavours of blueberries, blackberries, spices, salts and touches of cardamom.

This comes from a beautiful parcel of 25 year old vines perched on the top of the Marun hill, where soil is poor and drainage is excellent. Year in, year out grape berries are small and scarce in this vineyard. The 2006 is absolutely shimmering with bright fruit flavours, deep and brilliant in colour, a svelte, sumptuous texture complements the fresh crisp acidity, this bursts with velvety blueberry, blackthorn fresh raspberry, salt and plum skin flavours.

This clear, straw-colored Italian sparkler pours with a quick mound of foam; a fountain of bubbles persists in the glass. Citric, lemony and fresh, the carbonation is a bit nose-tingling at first. Crisp and tart, prickly and mouth-filling, it's a relatively simple wine but clean and balanced, easy to quaff and good with food.

FOOD MATCH: Worked well to wash down a Marcella Hazan classic, fricasseed chicken with egg and lemon.

Las uvas se cosechan a mano y poner en las cajas. Queste vengono pigiate ed il mosto viene lasciato a macerare a contatto delle bucce per breve tempo. Estos son triturados y el mosto se deja a macerar en la piel en contacto por un tiempo corto. La fermentazione si svolge per parte del mosto in acciaio e per l’altra in fusti di rovere. La fermentación se lleva a cabo por parte del mosto en acero inoxidable y la otra en barricas de roble. Dopo la fermentazione il vino rimane in acciaio e barrique per 6 mesi sui lieviti. Después de la fermentación el vino permanece en la siderurgia y barrique de 6 meses sobre sus lías. Colore giallo paglierino carico. Amarillo paja carga.
