Cantine del Notaio was established in 1998, when the owner Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti decided to exploit the potential of Italy's big red grape of the south, Aglianico, with the support of Professor Luigi Moio of Naples University.  The multiple vineyard sites, all 30+ years in age, are planted in the rich mineral laden soils on the slopes of a dormant volcano, Vulture.  Giuratrabocchetti and Moio are in the final stages of a 5 year plan to institue full biodynamic management and  they have also worked to consolidate a series of interlinking cellars ideal for barrel aging (originally dug in the 15th century by monks).  The resulting wines are of supreme quality; clean and modern while at the same time respecting traditions of the past, and undoubtably showcasing the regional terroir.
